Europe’s first web hosting supercentre was powered up on time following the achievement of a record breaking building programme completed in 4 months for Phase 1 and a further month for Phase 2, all in late 2000. The prestigious 125,000ft² complex was a flagship development for full service provider Worldport and their new European Headquarters.
The project itself probably created a first for Ireland as the fastest major scheme to be completed from a standing start, breaking new ground in design & build programming, in that the entire complex was designed as it was being built. A revolving shift pattern was employed to facilitate a 20 hour working day, 7 days per week in order to maintain the programme.
Due to the design as you build approach required by the fast track schedule many activities were undertaken out of sequence, an example being the raised floor which preceded the under floor data basket., cabling and busbar. The Worldport complex contains specially designed suites located on two floors. Each suite is wired with its own managed fibre optic network, security system and fully redundant dedicated power. Power is no problem for the supercentre which generates 10MW onsite (enough to supply a town of 10,000 people), with Worldport being an approved supplier of electricity to the Irish National Grid.
Internal walls were dry lined and skimmed, ceilings were metal perforated lay in tiles and MF Plasterboard in feature locations, with custom removable bulkheads for services access and the raised floor was metal concrete filled loose laid tile with vinyl inlay. Other features included a 2-storey network room surrounded by privalite screens and panelling, frameless glass screens to cellular offices, main and secondary spiral stairs with glass treads and balustrades surrounded by panelling.
