John Sisk & Son has successfully integrated modular bedrooms to complete a 198 bedroom hotel in Glasgow city centre for innovative hotel company citizenM’s first UK location.
The combination of Sisk’s in-depth hotel market knowledge and modular production efficiencies saw the scheme delivered using off-site construction techniques. Modular construction methods delivered many benefits over traditional building methods, including lower project cost, earlier completion time and improved quality and environmental building performance.
The hotel was constructed in the theatre district of Glasgow. The ability to crane prefinished rooms directly into position from the delivery vehicle brought great benefits to this city centre site. A two storey steel frame is supported off pile caps to form a podium slab at second floor level. Six floors of modular bedrooms, linen rooms, lift cores and stairwells were manufactured off site and then installed on top of the podium.
The ends of each of the 198 bedroom modules were fully glazed before delivery. The building is clad in a mixture of stone rainscreen and metal cladding to complement the extensive glazing requirements that are a feature of the citizenM brand.
Inside the hotel, electronic kiosks offer self service check in/out instead of a reception desk. All rooms are doubles with super sized beds, power rain showers and feature advanced audio visual and IT features, including a moodpad, controlling all the functions of the room, from temperature to the colour of the lighting.
