ScottishPower Renewables awarded the contract to increase generating capacity at Whitelee Windfarm to John Sisk & Son and Roadbridge, working together in joint venture. Whitelee, in East Renfrewshire, is already Europe’s largest onshore windfarm and will increase generating capacity by more than 200MW through the installation of 75 additional turbines. The work included the construction of access roads, substation and control buildings, and the wind turbine generator bases, which were fitted with turbines by Alstom. The extra generating capacity was connected to the National Grid in 2012.
Sisk extractied a total of 1 million m3 of rock during the work and the deep peat soil structure on Eaglesham Moor demanded both effective engineering and sensitive environmental expertise to deliver the project successfully.
