Habitats - Located in Somerset in South West England this project location hosts a variety of habitats, including scrub, grassland, hedgerow, ditches, ponds, reedbeds, and woodland; across which a diversity of flora and fauna thrive. Protected species on the site include great crested newts, water voles, birds, grass snakes and slow worms. A comprehensive biodiversity management plan is being implemented on site to ensure that mitigation measures are successful and in accordance with Natural England licences.
Culture - An important cultural symbol stands tall within the site: the 'willowman', a sculpture of 12 metres in height made from willow on the edge of the M5 Motorway near Bridgwater reflecting the traditional use of local crop willow in industry and craft. An exclusion zone has been set up around the 'willowman’ to protect it during construction works.
Community - Sisk have issued a 'residents Information and FAQ' booklet to the local community, followed up by regular verbal and newsletter updates. Locals have a 24-hour hotline number for direct communication as required throughout the project. 60% of site labour is local, and local companies are given an opportunity to tender for elements of the works. A local farmer is employed for dust suppression and road sweeping, a local metal fabricator is supplying railings, and a local welder is manufacturing steel plates.
Reuse of Resources - Rainwater and groundwater is reused for dust suppression on site. Existing site materials are treated and reused as a stone capping layer, thereby reducing the amount of import to the site. Over 90% of excavated material is reused on site.
Green Procurement - The surface water drainage kerbing used in this project is ‘Envirokerb’, a kerb made from a recycled material, that is strong, lightweight, and durable. Using this produce reduces carbon footprint by reducing virgin material, haulage requirements, and mechanical fitting requirements (manual fitting due to light weight). Drainage rhynes are lined with ‘Erosamat' erosion control material to stabilise the new side slopes. This material is a mesh of jute fibres that supports growth and absorbs impact of rain. It protects seeds until a root system is established (over 12-24 months) when the 'Erosamat' then biodegrades as nutrients into the ground.
