Project: Runcorn Thermal Power Station (TPS). This is the largest waste to energy plant of its type being built in Europe with capacity to process 750,000 tonnes of municipal waste.

Waste to energy - Non-recyclable waste from Greater Manchester and Cheshire processed into solid recovered fuel (SRF) will be used to fuel this plant, much of it being transported by rail. Heat from the incineration process will be recovered and used to generate power and export steam to the nearby Runcorn chemical works plant.
Ground stabilisation - Lime stabilisation was used to stabilise soil on this brownfield site. As the site had a history of chemical manufacturing the lime stabilisation acted to lock in and prevent leaching of contaminants. The stabilised soil was reused on site under areas of hardstanding where possible.
Reuse of materials - Demolition material from existing buildings and external yards was all crushed and reused on site, both for temporary working platforms and under permanent works.
Materials management - The frame for the waste bunker, tipping hall and boiler house required the pouring of more than 30,000m3 of reinforced concrete. A mix design was developed with a high ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) content, in some cases replacing 80% of the Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). This reduced the effects of contaminants in the ground, and also reduced CO2 emissions (associated with production of OPC) by more than 40%.
