AIB Bankcentre Dublin
Client : AIB plc
Value : AED 492.7m (€94m)
The 34,000 m2 new building was designed by RKD Architects following an international design competition. This major expansion of AIB Bankcentre provides state-of-the art accommodation for 3,500 people, in a bright open plan environment.
The building is planned around a new 6-storey atrium space, the largest indoor atrium in Ireland. The atrium (50mx70mx30m high) is the focal point of the building, with walkways and balconies on all sides. It also links the new and old buildings by suspended walkways on the 2nd and 4th floors. The atrium's striking curvilinear glass roof has become an iconic landmark in the area.
The structure utilises solar gain and underfloor heating from the large central atrium to provide some heating, and passive chill beams for thermostatically controlled cooling when required. The end result is a fresh and very quiet environment.
Accommodation is provided primarily in open-plan office space with less than 5% cellular offices, respective office ancillary spaces are contained on each office floor.
The expansion also includes new kitchen and restaurant facilities capable of catering for up to 5000 people is provided on the ground floor with self-contained private dining facilities on the 5th floor.
There are five feature “Jewellery Box” staircases on the outside of the building. These are totally suspended glass box structures that hang from the main internal walls, with suspended stairs. Feature lighting is built into the handrails.
Regular handovers to the Client were accommodated as a number of business groups were re-centralised back to Bankcentre. These handovers occurred while substantial phases of the work were still underway in adjoining areas and not a single AIB work day was lost while the project was on-site.
Working closely with building designers utilising passive chilled beams, advanced ventilation technologies, and a high-performance facade John Sisk & Son worked to provided AIB with a truly modern 21st Century HQ campus.
